{Niagra Falls, ON} All entry points from the Western New York and Canadian border are closed until further notice as a vehicle explosion occurred on the Rainbow Bridge. Major Damage has been reported at 2 of the checkpoints. Multiple sources have stated that the vehicle was attempting to enter the U.S. from Canada. We will continue to update this article as more information comes out in the upcoming hours.
Update 1 (1:40 PM) : New York Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement earlier stating:
“I have been briefed on the situation that occurred at the Rainbow Bridge in Buffalo. At my direction, the New York State Police is actively working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to monitor all points of entry to New York. I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has released a statement.
“Additional measures are being contemplated and activated at all border crossings across the country. We are taking this extraordinarily seriously,” he added."
Canada's Public Safety Minster, Dominic LeBlanc, has stated,
“It’s a source of concern for the government of Canada and for the United States so we’re taking this circumstance very seriously but to speculate on the origin of this particular circumstance … when we don’t have reliable verified information is not responsible.”
Update 2 (1:57 PM): The US Transportation Security Administration has released a statement.
“TSA and the department of homeland security are in close and ongoing touch with all partners and continue to monitor the situation and may adjust security postures as or when necessary.”
Update 3 (2:04 PM): CNN Reports that the two in the vehicle have been pronounced deceased.
Update 4 (2:31 PM): NYPD has been deployed to Rainbow Bridge. NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced on X on Wednesday:
“The NYPD and our partners have already enhanced security, and the city is on heightened alert due to the upcoming holiday, so the public will see increased security at locations across New York City, including entry and
egress points into and out of the city,” he said.“We have also reached out to, and are in ongoing communication with, partners from across different levels of government to assist with this effort. Our number one priority is, and always will be, the safety of New Yorkers."
